Gloves :: Handschuhe

These are gloves that I made as a Christmas gift for my mum. I used Drops Baby Alpaca Silk Yarn which is wonderfully soft and has a luxury feel to it. My mum loves her new gloves and used them very often during the cold winter days

Yarn: ca. 60 g of DROPS BabyAlpaca Silk, 8465 medium grey
Needles: 2,75 mm

PS: The photos are about four weeks old, now there is no snow but almost spring!

My first project of the year :: Mein erstes Projekt in diesem Jahr

This really has been a very long break from blogging. But you know what it is like. First you are occupied by making all the Christmas presents then you can't share them because they are still secret and then there is no daylight to take proper pictures (I really don't like using the flash). But now I am back and I want to show you my first project of the year. It is a cardigan that was featured in one of Germany's currently very popular country living magazines. It only took me three weeks to finish. So it was ready just in time for the very cold weather we have at the moment.

Yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers, 9452 Summer Sky Heather (4 skeins)
Needles: 4,5 mm and 5,0 mm

Little boy's coat :: Mantel für kleine Jungs

I made a coat! Yes, it's only a very small one but it is a proper little coat for my nephew Henry. I just love the look of little children in classic clothes. therefore I chose a brown wool fabric for the outside and for the lining I chose a brown cotton fabric with lots of litte cars on it. It took me quite a long time to decide which pattern to use and what would be best, with or without a hood, buttons or zipper, duffle coat or pea coat? In the end I decided to try this pattern by Dear my kids. It was my very first coat and the instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I was a bit scared to do the lining, but all went easy. So maybe some time soon I can try a big coat for myself ;-)

Henry really like his new coat and has already tested it. Of course every now and then he has to stop and open his jacket to see if all the little cars are still inside :-)

Harvest Time :: Erntezeit

Autumn has arrived here and with it there are trees full of apples, the smell of burnt wood, golden leaves and the very special kind of blue in the sky that you only get this time of the year. I was busy and turned our apples into apple sauce and made two types of pumkin jam - one with apples and one with oranges. Both are very delicious. and because we have very red and almost purple apples in the garden, our apple sauce is deliciously pale pink - oh beautiful autumn!
They look like big plums, but are apples! Does anyone know the name?

Weekend Travel Bag :: Kosmetiktasche

When I first saw the projects in the book "Weekend Sewing" by Heather Ross, I knew I wanted to make the weekend travel bag because I really like the look of it and I wanted to know how to make a bag that is constructed in this particular way. So at the weekend before our holiday to the Alps I quickly made one. I didn't really take long and I think I have learned some new things from it. I chose grey polka dot oilcloth for the lining because I often was unlucky to have a leaking shower gel bottle. For the outside I used one of the fat quarters from Volksfaden that I won earlier this year. I have to say that I am very happy with my bag and the two weeks test during the holidays showed that is is the perfect size, everything I need fits in there. There are a few things I would perhaps change the next time. I would propably leave the edges of the parts raw and then finish them with a bias binding. And perhaps I would add some pieces at the end of the zipper to have something to hold on when unzipping it. Other than that it is a great project and would make a lovely gift since there are endless possibilities of embellishing it.

I finished my first quilt! :: Mein erster Quilt ist fertig!

It is actually finished since a few weeks but I didn't get round posting about it because I was on a phantastic holiday and busy climbing, hiking and cycling in the Alps and dreaming about dirndls, but that is another story.

The quilt measures about  152 x 178 cm (60 x 70 in). It is made of 418 squares, some of them are fabrics from old pyjamas and I really hesitated to cut into my favourite, but hopelessly worn down pyjama but now I am glad because it "lives on" in this quilt. Most of the new fabrics are from this shop.

The quilting part was what I feared most, but turned out to be great fun. I only have a 23 years old sewing machine and walking foots are not available. I used Odif 505 temporary fabric glue to prepare the quilt sandwich and it worked like a dream, no shifting of the layers.

I am really happy with how it turned out and the colours make me smile and think of lovely summer days even autumn is almost on our doorstep now.

Back again:: wieder zurück

Hello girls, sorry for the long unintended break. But that I didn't blog doesn't mean that I haven't been busy:

I spent a lovely week in Denmark.
Ich hatte einen tollen Urlaub in Dänemark.

I finished the quilt top and back for my summer quilt and started quilting.

Baked delicious bread with dried tomatoes and rosemary.

And I made a little diaper bag for my sister. I used hexagons on linen once more and even did some hand embroidery and love the result - such a happy little bag!

On the go-verall

on the go-verall by pi-pa-po
This is the last of the four knitted gifts for little Louis. When I first saw the "on the go-verall" I knew I had to knit it! Such a cute pattern. I used cotton yarn since it's for a summer baby but because of the required gauge you get quite a thick fabric, meaning it might be still too warm to wear in summer.... Oh well, it looks cute anyway, even on the hanger. I used some red vintage buttons that I had in my drawer for a long time saving it for a special project like this one. I also put it a little label made of fabric with three mice. I love those details that are hidden away and nobody else knows they are there.

Saartje's bootees

And as promised here is another sweet knitted gift I made for my nephew: Saartje's bootees in brown and light blue. I have knitted quite a few of them now and I always return to this pattern because it is quick and easy and very, very cute. The other good thing about it is that it suits both boys and girls.

Baby Cardigan :: Babyjäckchen

Here is the 2nd knitted present for my new nephew Louis Gabriel. I chose the Baby Sophisticate pattern because I fell in love the moment I first saw it. I think it is perfect for a little boy, and indeed makes them look like little gentlemen. There really aren't that many typical boy patterns. I substituted the recommended wool yarn for a cotton / acrylic mix since this is for a summer baby and it shouldn't be too warm and it should be easily washable. The result is still quite a thick fabric, but it will fit in autumn and perhaps that's ok for then. I added a little label made of toy soldier fabric, isn't that cute?
